A huge factor that is beyond your (or our) control is the level of competition out there for your top keywords or search phrases. If you are an online book seller - we're sorry, but there's no way you're going to rank on the first page ahead of Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble, and the like.

Here's another example: If you sell “Volkswagen parts”, the competition is a lot stronger than if you are in a niche market and sell “antique Volkswagen steering wheels in Tampa”. For the former, we probably couldn't guarantee a first page listing (though we could still dramatically improve your search ranking). However, for the latter, we would probably be able to offer you some kind of guarantee.

No! - Google, Yahoo, Bing, and the other search engines do not sell placement in organic listings (pay per click is another story).

These companies generally do one of three things:

• They sell you keywords or search phrases that no one is searching for. If there is very little traffic (and thus very little competition) for a particular keyword, it's relatively easy to rank on page one of the search results. But this does your company little good since very few people are searching for these terms!

• They build a separate, highly optimized website that redirects traffic to your website. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this (as long as they are up front about it) and it can be highly effective - we offer a similar service occasionally. But keep in mind that if you ever decide to cancel your service with them, they will simply sell this web traffic to your competitors, and your site will still rank poorly in the search engines!

• They sell you a good keyword phrase, but they only show your ads in a very narrow geographic area (like your zip code). Every time you search for the phrase - you see your ad, and you are thrilled to be at the top of Google. But you're being duped! If someone across town searches for your keywords, your ad's not there! We have only seen this type of campaign work for businesses with a very narrow geographic market, like pizza parlors or video stores - they only sell within a few miles' radius, so this can be a very cost-effective way for them to advertise...Not so much for the rest of us!
